From the New York Times online:
Senate Passes Sweeping Law on Food Safety
The Food Safety Modernization Act, which gives the FDA much-needed regulatory and inspection powers, needs to be reconciled with the House version, but it’s a pretty good use of the lame-duck session. They might even be growing a spine.
Most significantly, though, the Senate bill had pretty strong bipartisan support–a rare experience. The past year’s triple-threat of widespread disease and financial loss from peanut butter, spinach and eggs seems to have woken 3/4 of the Senate out of their tendency to ignore the public good in favor of dealmaking. But it really makes you wonder about the remaining senators and what century they believe they’re living in.
